Work for the Weekend

Check out what makes Chicago Northwest best for an organization’s events

I love my job, but it’s what I do in my free time that gives me balance. My paycheck works in perfect harmony with the volunteer position I hold with our local women’s club. When I was recently given the opportunity to plan a weekend retreat intended to strengthen family bonds for members of our organization, I worried that the amount of work I’d have to put in might offset the joy I get from my volunteer position. Would I feel more annoyed and stressed than fulfilled?

The Chicago Northwest area came to the rescue. After researching a few different locations, I discovered that Schaumburg checked every box on my list. Comfortable hotels? Check. Ample activities? Check. Restaurants to rave about? Check. My extra free time responsibilities required hardly any time from me.

Residence Inn SchaumburgTiming is everything
The families attending our retreat were all on limited budgets, so finding affordable options was an important part of the planning process. Even though we didn’t require the use of the state-of-the-art convention center in Schaumburg, we saved some money by planning our retreat during the “off-season,” when there weren’t any large corporate events or conventions in the area. We booked our rooms for the weekend at the Homewood Suites by Hilton, a hotel that primarily caters to business travelers during the week and discounts their rooms on the weekend. Marriott’s Residence Inn and other extended stay hotels in the area offer similar discounts for the weekend crew.

LEGOLAND Discovery Center - ChicagoFun for all ages
Schaumburg offers a variety of activities for different age groups. After attending a quick workshop in the morning, families with younger children headed off to the nearby LEGOLAND® Discovery Center. Parents said they had as much fun as their kids making new creations in the Build & Test Zones and riding the interactive rides. Those traveling with teenagers tested their wits at Mastermind Escape Room. This is often used as a teambuilding activity for corporate retreats, but the same cooperation and communication skills that are critical to success in the business world also apply in the family setting. That evening we all met up for a rowdy dinner theater experience at Medieval Times. Huzzah!

Chicago Prime Steakhouse - Pork chopSchaumburg after dark
While our group wasn’t really about the nightlife, as I was planning our retreat I couldn’t help but notice that there were lots of things to do after hours as well. Seasons 52 is an upscale eatery that offers group dining options and an extensive wine list, complete with pairing recommendations from their Master Sommelier. Finn McCool’s Irish Sports Pub, Chicago Prime Steakhouse or The Snuggery Pub would all be great places to catch up with old friends during a military, fraternity or sorority reunion. There are also a couple of comedy clubs in the area that I’d love to check out on my next visit.

The perfect blend
The best part about this retreat was that it wasn’t something people attended because it was mandatory. It wasn’t a business trip where the rest of the family tagged along. Everyone truly wanted to be together, and the Chicago Northwest area offered the perfect blend of activities for an unforgettable retreat. In today’s fast-paced society, one of the biggest challenges people face is finding quality time to spend with their families, but Schaumburg made that possible.
